Well ya’ll, the weekend is almost over and I doubt I’m the only one that wishes they didn’t pass by so quickly! What better way to get excited for the week than to ignore the fact that I have to work and focus on all the books I’m excited to read! Brenda and Norma over at Two Sisters Lost in a Coulee and I are bringing you all Sneak Peek Sunday – a meme where we discuss books we are excited to be starting as a group, and our thoughts after reading the first few pages!
This week, I’m featuring Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan which we are slated to read with the Traveling Friends group this month! Crazy Rich Asians was the monthly poll winner and I can definitely see why! Having just hit the big screen as a major motion picture that’s made a big impact at the box office I couldn’t be more excited to read this with some amazing ladies! I’m a big stickler about reading something before I see the movie or TV show rendition of it so this couldn’t come soon enough for me.
After reading the first few pages of this I couldn’t be more intrigued. I’ve been binging a lot of thrillers and suspense novels and this is an excellent change of pace. While it doesn’t come blowing right out of the gate with a jarring hook the writing is top-notch. There is something utterly lush about it and it’s vivid and immediately described the opening scene in a way that left me charmed. The setting seems somehow worldly and posh and as I’ve mentioned before one of my favorite things about reading is the ability to transport oneself anywhere. There are little footnotes that help add context to words and references to a culture that you may not be familiar with and I absolutely love that. I know this one isn’t going to just be entertaining but it’s going to be a sweeping tale that takes me somewhere I’ve never been before!
When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home, long drives to explore the island, and quality time with the man she might one day marry. What she doesn’t know is that Nick’s family home happens to look like a palace, that she’ll ride in more private planes than cars, and that with one of Asia’s most eligible bachelors on her arm, Rachel might as well have a target on her back. Initiated into a world of dynastic splendor beyond imagination, Rachel meets Astrid, the It Girl of Singapore society; Eddie, whose family practically lives in the pages of the Hong Kong socialite magazines; and Eleanor, Nick’s formidable mother, a woman who has very strong feelings about who her son should–and should not–marry. Uproarious, addictive, and filled with jaw-dropping opulence, Crazy Rich Asians is an insider’s look at the Asian JetSet; a perfect depiction of the clash between old money and new money; between Overseas Chinese and Mainland Chinese; and a fabulous novel about what it means to be young, in love, and gloriously, crazily rich
