Top 5 Tuesday: Cozy Reads!

Top 5 Tuesday is a meme hosted by Bionic Book Worm where different topics are explored each week. Go check out her blog because there’s a lot of great stuff there! Remember if you participate in the meme to link her back!

This weeks topic is Top 5 Cozy reads. Like Bionic Book Worm I’m a bit of a seasonal reader. While I’ll mix things up and read almost anything there is something extra cozy about the fall / winter seasons that make you want to curl up with a good book! In the Winter and Fall I like to read a bit of romance, fantasy and cozy mysteries!

Nobody’s Sweetheart Now by Maggie Robinson

The coziest of cozy mysteries! I received this from Edelweiss and didn’t expect too much and it totally blew me away! The tale of Addie, and her recently deceased husband (back to haunt her) after a dinner party goes awry when a dead body is discovered on her property. The banter between Addie and her late husband Rupert is honestly hilarious. There’s a campy, cute humor here that kept me rapt for the entire read!

My Name is Memory by Ann Brashares

A sweet, sweeping and realistic romance that spans not just decades, but entire lifetimes. Daniel has spent lifetimes falling for the same girl, chasing her through each lifetime – every one more fraught than the last. While he retains his memory of their tumultuous past, Sophia eternally forgets. As we’re given glimpses of their past together, their present is unfolding in a fast paced manor now that a mysterious force has come to tear them apart. This one, honestly, just made my heart happy. I think even if romance isn’t your thing, there’s something to love about this story for everyone.

Kindred by Octavia E. Butler

READ. IT. YA’LL. I can’t suggest it enough. The story of a woman named Dana, who in 1976 California inexplicably begins traveling back in time to the antebellum south over and over again to the same young boy. This is fraught with dangers and passion, it asks hard questions and created an incredibly unique story line that has stayed with me since I read it.

Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

Yeah, yeah, yeah, the hype is real I get it. People get a little too over the top about how great the series is, but on the real – it’s one of the most singularly epic displays of world building and character development I’ve ever come across. It’s one of the overlaps in books my husband and I share and I can think of nothing more enjoyable than curling up for the long haul in reading this series. Don’t knock it before you try it my dudes – because this shit is amazeballs. My only hang up is Martin doesn’t seem to care about ACTUALLY ENDING THE SERIES. But alas, I’ll patiently wait and read whatever he decides to give me.

Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris

Sedaris has an incredibly unique and original voice that I think would resonate with anyone. His books are collections of essays about his life and upbringing. Despite some of them being topics that are difficult he has such an incredible ability to bring humor to almost anything. If I could try to emulate any singular person by way of writing – it would be Sedaris. If you haven’t read any of his books, I can’t suggest it enough! Santaland Diaries might be more apt for the Winter season, but it felt like the easy way out.

Are you a seasonal or mood reader? What types of books do you like to read in the cooler weather? Drop me a note in the comments and let me know!

  1. Welcome to Top 5 Tuesday! So glad to have you 🙂 Game of Thrones is the perfect fall read. I read the first three books and I always read them in November for some reason. Glad to also meet another seasonal/mood reader 🙂 Added you to the list!

  2. I’ve wanted to read Octavia Butler’s work for a long time now, but never knew where to begin. I’ll have to start with Kindred – thanks for the recommendation! I usually like to read lengthier novels during the colder months, when I need an escape from winter in the Midwest.

  3. I don’t know if GOT would make for a cozy fall read but it would make for a hell of a ride! I love the cover of Nobody’s Sweetheart now! It’s very 1920 😉

  4. I have a theory that he is not ending the series because he is waiting out the show to finish so that way if the shows screws it up a little, he can do a better job in the books… or either that or he doesn’t want to give spoilers away because let’s face it the series foreshadowed and prophesied many of its infamous events e.g. Red Wedding, Littlefinger’s death by Sansa, and erm *cough* valonqar. 😉
I’m tempted to read My Name is Memory purely for my namesake. 😔
