Top 3 Thursday: Books I’m Afraid to Start!

Why hello there fellow readers, cooks and bloggers alike! How is your week going? Mine, is a raging dumpster fire.

KIDDING! But also, a little bit not kidding. This week has, in fact been super stressful for me. However, that’s not to say I’ve not been more stressed before and that I don’t have a lot of positive things in my life *I don’t like to complain ok!*. Anywho, as I mentioned on Tuesday, my reading slump has been killing me but I’m slowly but surely pulling myself out of that and I should have some new reviews and recipes for ya’ll next week! However, I didn’t want to post just one measly time this week so I wanted to take a few moments to participate in today’s Top 3 Thursday!

Top 3 Thursday is a meme hosted by A Cosy Reader where different topics are explored week to week and you choose your “top 3” within those confines. It’s a super fun way to revisit old books and to learn about new ones from fellow readers! If you haven’t checked out this blog, I can’t suggest it enough. Today’s topic is “books I’m afraid to start” which I kind of feel like is every book for me because I’m always hunting for my next obsession!

Lock Every Door by Riley Sager

Not only does this one sound creepy AF but having only released two books so far I stand at a 50/50 split with Riley Sager. I read his book Final Girls during my thriller binge last year and absolutely loved it! I was riveted and on the edge of my seat from start to finish. I adored the way he crafted the story and the twists and turns along the way. However, following reading his first novel, I read his second The Last Time I Lied and it fell pretty flat for me. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it, because I did, or that I didn’t fly through it, because I read it a break-neck speed but something was missing for me. I couldn’t connect to the MC and the plot holes felt very loud to me. So I’m nervous to read his third novel, but will without a doubt pick it up ASAP after it’s release. Fingers crossed it holds up to his first, instead of falling flat!

Recursion by Blake Crouch

42046112

So if you’ve been following my blog for any length of time, you’ll know a few things about me. Highest among them that I read a lot, I love to cook, and I’m redundant AF. Among those redundancies are books that I suggest literally all the time, to all readers and my first book on that list is always Dark MatterI swear to you that I have yet to suggest this book to someone and not have them come back and tell me how it totally blew them away. I mean *same*. So tickle me pink when I see that Crouch is releasing a new book, that sounds just as eerie and looks to be the same blend of excellent story crafting mixed with just the right amount of mind-fuckery. THEN to top it off, the book gods leave me #blessed with an ARC that I’m trying really hard to be patient because it’s set to be a group read and I KNOW imma need to talk about this one.

Verity by Colleen Hoover

41957126

This baby has been poppin’ up all over my Goodreads and from some of my favorite reviewers. I’ve read a few works by Hoover and while they’re all super highly rated, I never felt quite as enthusiastic as other readers seem to about her work. What I will say is that the books I have read by Hoover are all incredibly unique and the twists she throws in there I never see coming from a mile away. The big thing I keep seeing in the reviews, over and over for this book is the ending and how it’s Grade-A crazy pants. I mean, who doesn’t love a good ending that you don’t see coming? This one just came through at my library and I know I’m gonna move it ahead of a few other reads because I just need to know! I’m nervous for it to hold up to the hype, but I’m going to dive in regardless.

An over reaction? Likely.
