Top 5 Tuesday: Books I’m Amped To Read!

Howdy y’all! It’s been a whirlwind few days for me and with my husbands PhD proposal taking place today my life has been a mess to say the least! Not only that but again I’m having issues finding the motivation to read. On the bright side though, my husband and I have just gotten into The West Wing and it’s amazing! I don’t know what it is but I absolutely love DC and pretty much everything set there so it’s been fun. HOWEVER, this is not a TV blog it’s a book blog. So today there isn’t actually a Top 5 Tuesday topic so I thought I’d wing it and talk about some books I’m really excited to read.

So, thinking back to last year when I got myself into a giant book slump I thought it’s high time I toss out these books that I’ve been trying to read for ages and shake things up with different types of books. This worked out really well for me last year so here’s to hoping this fixes my issue of not vibing with reading recently!

With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo

First things first, can we talk ’bout that cover though!? I love a beautiful cover and this is a serious *aesthetic* here. I literally can’t get enough of it. If that’s what initially drew me into the synopsis it isn’t what grabbed my attention. High school senior and single mother Emoni Santiago is down on her luck and facing difficult decisions as a mother in high-school with only the help of her abuela. Her true passion lies in the culinary arts, and while she can’t afford the time or expense of her schools culinary arts class and trip she can’t shake her love of cooking. This story struck me both because it’s something totally outside of my realm and life experience but also because I love cooking and it’s one of my main sources of stress-relief. Just reading the synopsis I felt an immediate connection to Emoni. Not only that, but I can tell there are going to be so many options for great recipe and read posts! This one’s not set for release until May and I’ve already got it on pre-order because I need that cover on my bookshelf!

Run Away by Harlan Coben

Ugh, another stunner of a cover amiright!? This one isn’t that far outside the realm of what I generally read since it does appear to be a thriller. However, this story about a parent who loses their daughter, only to see her playing the guitar in central park drew me in hook, line and sinker. I can’t imagine what I’d do as a parent to see someone who appears to by my child, only to have them run away from me. Having just been released on the 19th and already having thousands of stunning reviews and an average GR rating of 4.20 this one has sky rocketed itself onto my “must read ASAP” list!

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

You probably haven’t heard of this book before, but it looks like a good one. JUST KIDDING! The Great Alone took Goodreads by storm last year and I just kept passing over it for other reads. Set in Alaska, which is on my short list of places to visit, this is a family saga about love and loss and the bonds we form. I’m generally not a big fan of family drama’s or portraits of families. I can’t really explain why I’m not but I’ve never been particularly drawn to that subset of fiction. However, in an effort to break out (yet again) of my comfort zone, it seems like a fitting choice to pick Hannah. With truly stellar reviews and so many notable books under her belt, I couldn’t think of a better way to dip my toes into this genre.

The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simmons 

In an effort to read and review all different types of books I recently asked the GR community for romance suggestions. As I’ve not been reading too many romance novels I wanted to again broaden my scope and try out something I hadn’t. Overwhelmingly, The Bronze Horseman was suggested and showed up on many book lists during my research. Set in WWII not only is this historical fiction, set in one of the most fascinating times in history but we’ve got a sweeping and impossible love to boot. Another one I’ve been glossing over because it didn’t really fit my *brand* for what I’d fallen into reading but it’s one I always think back to and need to get my hands on ASAP.

Magic for Liars by Sara Gailey 

This one is a bit of a cop out if I’m going to be honest. My two favorite types of books are mystery/thriller and fantasy. So tickle me pink when I find this gem that combines them both! I mean, just go ahead and sign me up ASAP. Private investigator Ivy never wanted to be magic like her gifted sister Tabitha. When a gruesome murder takes place, Ivy is drawn into the web of magic and mystery. I mean, even just typing out the two sentence synopsis here gets me excited for this read. I’ve never seen anything quite like it and I love unique and original stories with a twist, I’m sure this one is going to be a winner! Plus another beautiful cover!

Well, there you have it folks! Fingers crossed this weird book phase I’m in changes SOON because it’s becoming a real drag. However, I did finish The Power recently and I’ll be posting a review for that baby tomorrow (I swear) and I’m almost done with The Night Olivia Fell which I’ll be posting a review for soon as well so keep an eye out!
